439. Title & Author: The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss (994 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Fantasy
Completed: 27 June 2018
Summary & Review:
The old innkeeper now known as Kote continues his tale about his younger days when, as Kvothe, he gained fame and acclaim across the Four Corners of Civilization. During this day's telling, Kvothe recounts his continuing studies at the university, his travels to Vintas, his service in the employ of the Maer, his hunt through the Eld forest to find bandits, the mystical time he spent in the Fae, his martial education in Ademre, and finally, his return to the university. Despite the many triumphs he recounts, an undercurrent of impending disaster flows beneath the tale.
What a doorstopper! Almost a thousand pages! Thankfully, Rothfuss has created a very intriguing world and is a talented storyteller so those nearly-thousand-pages weren't boring. Frusting? Yes. Boring? No.
Why where they frustrating? I think my frustration really stemmed from the fact that Rothfuss has created such an intriguing world yet has decided to tell this story, or this story in this way, in that world. As I mentioned in my review of Book 1 (The Name of the Wind (#425)), I am not fond of the character of Denna, Kvothe's love interest in the books. That's putting it lightly. The way Rothfuss seems to justify Denna treating Kvothe like garbage really makes me question Rothfuss himself. Is he just a complete beta-male who has let women walk all over him his whole life?
It's not just the Kvothe-Denna relationship that bothers me. Basically everything Rothfuss says about romance or sex is nonsense. Also, the whole segment of the book that takes place is the Fae was just an embarassing nerd's dream.
But, despite my complaints about Rothfuss' women-issues, my frustration at what might have been in this incredible world, the questionable allocation of those nearly 1,000 pages, etc., I am looking forward to reading the third book. If, that is, Rothfuss ever gets around to finishing it.
