Summary & Review:
After the human race had laid waste to the planet Earth, they devised a computerized system of controlling the vilest of human impulses in order to allow the species to thrive on their new planet called Harmony. After forty million of years successfully moderating the inherent evils in human nature, the guidance system, known as the Oversoul, is beginning to lose its controlling grasp. Knowing the calamity that is forthcoming, the Oversoul warns Volemak and his youngest son Nafai that they and their family must leave their home city of Basilica. Trusting in the Oversoul’s guidance, they sell all they have and head out into the desert not knowing their final destination.
The author, Orson Scott Card, has stated that this book is a loose fictionalization of the first part of The Book of Mormon. The parallels are clear and some readers felt this was just a rip off of The Book of Mormon. I didn’t feel that way at all. I think Card, who is a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wanted to give readers a new look at the scriptural events and offer his interpretation of the personal feelings, motivations, and reactions of many of the figures in The Book of Mormon. Plus, I think the world Card created for this story to take place within was excellent.
