264. Title & Author: Vincent: The Complete Self-Portraits by Bernard Denvir (144 pages)
Genre: Nonfiction—Art History
Completed: 4 June 2013

Summary & Review:
Despite the relatively short time that Vincent Van Gogh was actively painting, he produced dozens of self portraits, all of which are produced here in full color along with commentary about each work. Along with his own work, portraits of Van Gogh done by his contemporaries are also included.

Van Gogh is a very interesting painter. Thanks to his prolific correspondence, largely with members of his family, we have a ton of his own thoughts about his various paintings. It was interesting to read why Van Gogh chose to portray himself the way he did in these paintings. While the author’s commentary wasn’t very interesting, the inclusion of Van Gogh’s own words, as well as the paintings themselves, made up for it.
