453. Title & Author: Gatefather by Orson Scott Card (383 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Fantasy
Completed: 28 December 2018

Summary & Review:
As Danny battles his possession by the Belgod Set, his friends try to figure out a way to help him defeat this demon. With the assistance of his aunt Veevee, Pat figures out that she and Danny must travel to the underworld, like ancient mythical figures, to understand how to let go of and ultimately regain control of their bodies. Imbued with new powers upon their return to Mittlegard, Danny and Pat now have the chance to secure the safety of the peoples of both Mittlegard and Westil.

This was my favorite book in the trilogy. It had less of the unnecessary “adult” stuff of the previous two and more of something Card is very good at: deep philosophy wrapped in a fantasy story (e.g. his Speaker for the Dead (#237)). Also, the fact that Card was able to balance multiple storylines, dozens of characters, three different worlds, and give a satisfying conclusion to a three-book series in less than four hundred pages is pretty impressive.

Rating: 7.0
