278. Title & Author: A War of Gifts (An Ender Story) by Orson Scott Card (126 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Science Fiction
Completed: 8 December 2013

Summary & Review:
While the students at Battle School may be precocious geniuses being trained to lead men in war, they are still young children who have been ripped away from their families and stripped of all personal identity. To maintain cohesion and avoid inter-creed conflict, the practice and observance of religion has been banned at Battle School since the beginning. This year however, as Christmastime nears, two Dutch children observe their traditional Sinterklaas day rituals. Soon, many students are exchanging gifts in the name of Santa Claus, but one student needs more than a pair of socks or an extra meal to be healed during this Christmas season.

This book takes place during Ender’s time at Battle School and is a supplemental story to what takes place in the novel Ender’s Game. While Ender is not the main character in the story, he plays a key role in helping the protagonist, a child named Zeck, overcome the demons he has carried with him from home. While it was a short book, any addition to the Enderverse is welcome, in my opinion.

This book was an early Christmas present from my wonderful wife.
