Summary & Review:
Caught up in the glamour, money, and power of the New York City art world in the 1990’s, Lacey Yeager’s ambition takes hold of her life. Unsatisfied with eking out a meager existence as a low-level employee at Sotheby’s, Lacey maneuvers and schemes. First through a gutsy, illegal auction deal and then through private dealers and collectors until she is the owner of her own gallery. So focused on her own progress and upward motion, Lacey often leaves a trail of casualties in her wake.
Yes, this book is written by that Steve Martin, the “wild and crazy guy” Steve Martin. His range of talents is pretty incredible—I mean, he’s won a Grammy for his bluegrass banjo talents!—and this book was definitely not a book that got published merely because it was Steve Martin. He is a talented writer and was able to craft an interesting and melancholy story. One of my favorite parts of the book was the inclusion within the text itself of full-color reproductions of many of the art works referenced in the plot. It saved me the trouble of having to stop and Google them. While I am impressed with Martin’s talents, overall the book was perhaps a tad too depressing for me.
