Summary & Review:
On the planet Garden, Rigg has spent his whole life under the tutelage of his father. As they would explore the untamed high country of the Wallfold, Father would constantly teach and quiz Rigg about every conceivable subject from philosophy to economics to physics. Most importantly, however, was Father’s helping Rigg recognize and hone his special ability to see the paths every living thing made as they moved throughout their lives, no matter how far in the past they may have lived. When tragedy strikes and Rigg's father is killed in the forest, his dying words to his son are to find his sister in the capital city of the Wallfold. As Rigg embarks on this task, he discovers he is the long lost prince of the now deposed royal family and not everyone welcomes his return.
There is so much more to this book than just that main story line with Rigg. Each chapter begins with scenes taking place on a starship leaving Earth searching for a new home for the human race. This secondary storyline becomes of central importance as the book progresses, and at the end it appears as though the intersection of the two will play a major role in the coming series.
Having those two storylines gave the book a really interesting duality. Half the book was a medieval fantasy adventure, and the other half was an outerspace oriented science fiction tale. I thought it was pretty cool, especially as you see how the two stories come together. As always, Card’s writing was intriguing and entertaining and the pages flew by. I look forward to reading book two in the series.
