37. Title & Author: Greek Tragedies Vol. 1 edited by David Grene and Richmond Lattimore (295 pages)
Genre: Mythology--Greek Tragedy
Completed: 28 May 2008

Summary & Review:This volume is a compilation of five Greek tragedies, including Agamemnon and Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, Oedipus the King and Antigone by Sophocles, and Hippolytus by Euripides. All the plays were English translations from the original Greek.

I enjoyed all of the tragedies aside from Agamemnon which I thought was 59 pages too long (it is only 60 pages total). But, other than that, it was fun to read these. My favorite play in the group was Prometheus Bound which was an interesting look into sacrifice and was overall an entertaining drama. Of course, Oedipus is a classic tragedy and there is a reason that Aristotle always referred back to it as the tragedy--what is more tragic and pitiable than the story of Oedipus? If you haven't read any of the surviving Greek tragedies, this is a good place to start.
