5. Title & Author: State of Fear by Michael Crichton (675 pages)
Genre: Fiction--Thriller
Completed: 29 May 2007

Summary & Review:
The plot follows Peter Evans and crew across the globe to stop crazy environmentalist terrorists. They fall down ice crevices in Antarctica! They narrowly escape assassinations! And, they even get captured by tribal cannibals! All as they race the clock to stop these attacks.

I actually really liked the book, despite the plot that was middling at best. What made the book so interesting was how it showed what a crock global warming is. The book was filled with graphs, charts, and facts that show the real scientific evidence that global warming is completely manufactured and no one can actually control or, perhaps more importantly, predict the environment. It really opens your eyes and makes you think twice before you just accept what the media tells you. My favorite passage was when one of the characters was explaining to Peter that the media, politicians, etc. are promoting this "state of fear" even though none of their facts are true. We aren't going to get cancer from our microwave (most likely), our countries all over the world are safer than ever, and the environment is cleaner than ever. I didn't put the passage into my own words very well, but I loved it. And here's a random funny quote: "The Indians were expert observers of the natural world, so they realized that old-growth forests sucked." (481)
