493. Title & Author: Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine (291 pages)
Genre: Fiction--Thriller
Completed: 23 February 2020

Summary & Review:
Gina is an average suburban mom until the horrible truth behind her husband is revealed. Far from the mild-mannered dad he presents to the world, Melvin Royal is actually a sadistic serial killer. Now on the run from anonymous internet trolls who think she was in on the gruesome murders, the newly renamed Gwen and her children settle in serene Norton, Tennessee on the banks of Stillhouse Lake. Just as Gwen thinks things are settling down, murders that are eerily similar to Mel’s start happening in town and Gwen knows that her sense of safety was all a facade.

The story was okay, but I was not a fan of Caine’s writing style. It felt a little forced. Her expressions and metaphors just weren’t very smoothly integrated into the text and/or were clumsily expressed. Also, Gwen was not a very intriguing character so I don’t see myself reading any more in this series.

One last nit to pick, Caine seemed to take a lot of pride in how familiar she is with guns. She spent a lot of time showing off how she knew how shooting ranges work and proper safety procedures, but she constantly referred to a handgun’s magazine as a “clip.” This shattered the charade that she is actually familiar with firearms. Clearly, she’s never touched one.
