449. Title & Author: Munich by Robert Harris (303 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Historical Fiction
Completed: 6 November 2018

Summary & Review:
Two college friends find themselves on opposite sides during one of the most important events of the twentieth century: the Munich talks between Germany, Italy, France, and Great Britain. Hugh Legat is a young up-and-coming civil servant with the British  Foreign Office while his old Oxford friend Paul von Hartmann has found himself working in close proximity with Adolf Hitler. As the talks near, Legat and Hartmann reconnect with hope of doing something—anything—to stop the German dictator.

I’m not thrilled with my summary, but, oh well. Sometimes it’s hard to sum up a three-hundred-page book in a couple of sentences. Don’t let my poor summary dissuade you from reading this book. Harris has written some excellent books over the years (with Conclave (#385) as a major exception), and while this wasn’t his best, it was still a very entertaining novel with a lot of Harris’ acute historical details included. It was a great way to learn more about the infamous Munich agreement without being bored to tears by some nonfiction history book. Plus, it's always fun to read about places like Munich that we got to know so well during our four years in Germany.
