272. Title & Author: Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy (897 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Thriller
Completed: 25 September 2013

Summary & Review:
John Clark, a longtime CIA spook, is tasked to head a new multinational counterterrorist unit codenamed “Rainbow.” Based at SAS headquarters in Hereford, England, the unit made up of Brits, Americans, and soldiers from a few other NATO allies is soon dispatched to handle several terror incidents in Switzerland, Austria, and Spain. However, the frequency of these attacks raises the specter of someone or something organizing and encouraging them. Rainbow soon realizes that they are contending with something much more than small-time terror groups—an American based group of extreme environmentalists has figured out a way to kill off nearly all human life in only a matter of months in order to save the planet from the parasitic human race. John Clark and Rainbow must act to not only stop the attack, but punish those responsible.

While my all-time favorite Clancy novel remains Patriot Games, this was a fun read. Clancy is great with including a lot of real-life military detail in his books—from training techniques to equipment—and that is something I enjoy. I was a little surprised that the main terror group was an environmental one. But, this book was originally published in 1998, so it came a couple of years before the long-simmering threat of Islamist terrorism really boiled over. Now days, in book series by authors such as Brad Thor and Vince Flynn (RIP), the antagonists are all Muslim, so it is a nice throwback to see environmentalists or the IRA or Russians as the baddies.
