240. Title & Author: Shadow of the Hegemon by Orson Scott Card (451 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Science Fiction
Completed: 19 October 2012

Summary & Review:
After the Formic Wars are over, the young Battle School graduates return home as heroes. But, with the loss of an external enemy, Earth soon collapses into a maze of internal wars and power struggles. Seen as potential weapons for their home countries, the members of Ender’s victorious ‘toon are kidnapped. Behind the kidnapping is Achilles, Bean’s lifelong enemy from the streets of Amsterdam. Bean, as the only one who truly understands the evil within Achillies, must race to stop his ascension, both to save his kidnapped friends and to save humanity from the megalomaniacal, psychotic rule of this monster. Seeking to find a suitable replacement for Achilles to hold the reigns of world power, Bean turns to Ender’s influential older brother, Peter Wiggin.

The more I read in the Enderverse, as it’s called, the more I like the saga. Card has created a world where he can write an unlimited number of stories that feel natural, rather than forced, and add depth and humanity to it. Each book that I have read so far is a relevant and interesting addition to this alternate future. Bean is an incredibly interesting character. He is a genius and possesses skills and abilities that exceed anyone else on earth, yet he struggles with the same enduring questions and worries that everyone else ponders in their lives. He desires companionship, friendship, family, and love, yet protects himself from pain and loss. He struggles with issues of faith and doubt, but refuses to succumb to disbelief even when his genius intellect tells him there is no cause for hope or faith. I look forward to continuing to read the outstanding novels in both the Ender’s and Shadow Sagas.
