233. Title & Author: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling (309 pages)
Genre: Fiction—Fantasy
Completed: 21 July 2012
Summary & Review:
Growing up as nothing more than a young orphan forced to live with his spiteful aunt, uncle, and cousin, Harry Potter receives an invitation to study at the world’s preeminent school of witchcraft and wizardry, Hogwarts. Shocked and delighted to learn that he is in fact a wizard, Harry enters his new magical world eager to discover what he has been missing. Among the wonders of his new life, Harry learns that he is famous because he is the only person to ever survive an attempted deadly attack by the once powerful dark wizard, Voldemort. As Harry soon finds out after entering Hogwarts, Voldemort may have failed his first attempt at murdering Harry, but he is anxious to try again and regain the life and power he lost.
It has probably been a dozen years since I first read this book, and in that time the series has concluded and all the cinematic adaptations have been released. It is safe to say that Harry Potter has been quite a success. The most recent Harry Potter novel I read was the seventh and final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (#10), which was in 2007 and at that point, the series had really matured. No longer were the novels simply fun, young adult fantasy adventures, but they were now much more serious books. I was used to that Harry Potter, so going back to the beginning was interesting. This is such a kid’s book! Nothing particularly special about it, except for the fact that it launched one of the most popular and successful series of all time.
