Summary & Review:
As the battle between the Ally and Otherness continues to rage, Repairman Jack becomes more deeply embroiled in it than ever before. While looking for the kidnapped niece of one of his friends, Jack encounters a group called the Militia Vigilum—a small, secretive group of specially trained guards who watch over the Ally’s Oculi around the world. Through this new connection, Jack learns that he has been chosen as the Heir for the Ally, the next in line to stand against the encroachment of the Otherness. As part of his preparation for this role, Jack’s connections in this world have been systematically eliminated—his mother, father, sister, and brother have all been killed by the Ally so that Jack could become a weapon with no ties, a spear without branches. But, when the Ally sends the MV to eliminate Jack’s pregnant fiancé and her daughter, Jack has had enough.

F. Paul Wilson recently published the last entry in this series, which is book number 15 in the main Repairman Jack cycle. Here in book 10, the battle that appears as though it will be the main focus in the last five novels received an excellent foundation. Earlier Repairman Jack novels were more traditional thrillers with a small portion of the underlying larger battle tossed in. Now, however, the novels hinge on the cosmic struggle between Ally and Otherness and Jack’s role in that. Thus, the character of Jack has really undergone a transformation and is even more intriguing than he was. As always, Wilson wrote a great plot thread presented at a quick clip.
