Summary & Review:
While serving
as an Army Ranger, Eric Haney was invited to enter the selection course for a
secretive new Army unit: 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment—Delta,
better known as Delta Force. In this memoir of his years as a member of that ultra elite unit, Haney recounts the grueling training he endured, the missions
he went on, and the men he served with.
While Haney is not necessarily the best writer in the
world, the subject matter was interesting enough to me that I didn’t worry
about how it was presented. The first third of the book was especially
fascinating as Haney detailed the incredibly demanding selection process and
training he went through when entering Delta: endless hikes, endless hours at
the shooting range, and endless classroom training. After that portion of the
book, the story wasn’t quite as intriguing to me. Haney completed a lot of
missions in Central and South America as well as stuff in the Middle East and
ended up leaving Delta when he became the youngest Command Sergeant Major ever
promoted at just thirty three years old. Overall, it was fun to have an inside
look at a very unique world.
